Please read these Terms and Conditions ("Terms") carefully before using Type Shifter ("the Application", "the Service", "we", "us", or "our"). By accessing or using Type Shifter, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing, accessing, or using Type Shifter, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not use the Application.

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Application after any modifications constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. We encourage you to review these Terms periodically.

2. Description of Service

Type Shifter is a 6-in-1 reading app (read, listen, format, translate, export) available for Windows, Android, and the web. Key features include:

• 150 professional style templates for document formatting
• 1,900+ custom Google Fonts with independent heading and body font selection
• Bionic Reading technology with adjustable intensity
• OpenDyslexic font support for users with dyslexia
• Focus Tools: a reading ruler and colour overlays
• Light and dark mode app theme toggle, including dark mode for exported document output
• Text-to-speech ("Listen") in 49 languages with 179 voices, with MP3 recording
• Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for images, photos, and screenshots
• My Library: saved documents that resume at your last reading position
• Highlights and notes, exportable as a PDF, Word, or Markdown summary
• Cross-device library sync across up to 3 devices
• Optional AI Tools add-on: Summarize, Translate, Simplify, Ask a Question, Flashcards, OCR Cleanup, and Describe Images
• Offline Translate on Windows, included free with every licence
• Export functionality to HTML, DOCX, EPUB, and PDF formats
• Support for multiple input formats including TXT, RTF, DOCX, PDF, MD, EPUB, and HTML, and importing a live web page by URL

Most text processing occurs locally on your device and is never transmitted to external servers. The two exceptions are cross-device library sync, which runs automatically once a licence is activated on a device, and the optional AI Tools add-on. Both are described fully in our Privacy Policy.

3. Free Trial and Premium Subscription

Free Trial: New users receive a 14-day free trial with full access to all features. The trial period begins upon first use of the Application and cannot be paused or extended.

Premium License: After the trial period, continued use requires a one-time payment of £29 for a lifetime Premium license. The Premium license grants unlimited access to all current and future core features for the lifetime of the product, including Offline Translate on Windows and cross-device library sync. It does not include the AI Tools add-on, which is billed separately.

Refund Policy (Premium License): We offer a 14-day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase. If you are not satisfied with Type Shifter for any reason, email [email protected] within 14 days of your purchase and we will refund you in full. After 14 days, purchases are final. We also encourage users to take advantage of the free 14-day trial to evaluate the Application before purchasing.

3a. AI Tools Add-On Subscription

The AI Tools add-on is a separate, optional, recurring subscription on top of your Premium licence, billed monthly or yearly, with a monthly usage allowance for each tool. Subscriptions bought under the earlier Tier 1 and Tier 2 names continue on the same allowances for as long as they remain active.

• Billing: Charged monthly in advance via Stripe, until you cancel.
• Cancellation: Cancel at any time via the billing portal in the app. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period; you keep access until then, and you will not be charged again afterwards.
• Refunds: We do not provide partial refunds for the unused portion of a billing period. If you believe you were charged in error, email [email protected].
• Usage allowances: Each tool has its own monthly quota, shown in the app. Unused quota does not roll over to the next month.
• Changes to tiers or pricing: We may adjust AI Tools pricing or tier allowances from time to time. We will give reasonable notice of any price increase before it applies to your next billing cycle.
• Suspension for non-payment: We may suspend AI Tools access if a payment fails and is not resolved within a reasonable period, without affecting your underlying Premium licence.
• Not covered: Offline Translate on Windows is not part of this subscription; it's included free with your Premium licence and has no usage limit.

3b. AI Credits

Credits are an optional way to pay for individual uses of an AI tool after that tool's monthly allowance has run out. They are not a currency and have no cash value.

• Buying: Credit packs are a one-off payment, not a subscription. The number of credits in each pack is shown before you buy.
• Spending: A credit is only ever spent on a use you have agreed to, and only when the allowance for that tool is already used up. If a request fails, the credits for it are put back.
• Expiry and refunds: Credits do not expire while your licence is active. They are not transferable between licences, and unused credits are not refundable except where the law requires it.
• If your licence ends: Credits are tied to the licence they were bought for. If that licence is revoked for a breach of these Terms, any unused credits are lost.

3c. Using Your Own OpenAI Key

On the Windows desktop app you may choose to run certain AI tools on your own OpenAI account instead of ours.

• Your account, your agreement: When a tool runs on your key, your text goes from your computer straight to OpenAI under your own account. That use is governed by your agreement with OpenAI and billed by them, not by us. We are not a party to it and cannot see, control or support it.
• Your key: You are responsible for keeping your key secure and for any charges made on your OpenAI account. The key is stored encrypted on your computer and is never sent to us.
• No allowance, no credits: Uses on your own key do not count against any allowance and do not use credits. Equally, they carry no support or accuracy commitment from us beyond the app working as described.

3d. Pictures

• Stock photos: Photos come from Pexels and are used under the Pexels licence, which allows commercial use. The photographer, the source and the licence are shown with every photo and are kept in your exports. You are responsible for checking that a particular photo suits your use, especially where people or property are recognisable.
• Pictures made by AI: These are generated on request and charged in credits. We do not permit prompts asking for pictures of real, identifiable people, or for characters and other material owned by someone else, and requests of that kind may be refused. You are responsible for the descriptions you write and for how you use the pictures you make, including any claim that a picture is real.
• Labelling: A picture made by AI is captioned as such by default. If you turn that caption off, it is your responsibility to make clear, where it matters, that the picture was generated.
• Accuracy: A picture made by AI is not evidence of anything. It may show things that are wrong, impossible or misleading, and should not be used to illustrate facts it does not support.

3e. Audio and Video You Make

• Yours to use: Audio overviews, narrated videos and their captions are made from your own document, on your own device. We claim no rights over them.
• Written by AI: Where a script or narration is written by AI, it is a summary and may be wrong, incomplete or misleading. Check it before you publish it or rely on it, particularly any figure it says out loud.
• Voices: The voices are the synthetic ones supplied with the app, under their own licences. They are not recordings of real people and must not be presented as anyone's actual voice.

3f. Sending Documents Elsewhere

• Send to Kindle: we pass your file to Amazon; we do not control what Amazon does with it, how long delivery takes, or whether it is accepted. Amazon requires our sending address to be on your approved sender list, and applies its own size and format limits. Send only documents you have the right to send.
• Your inbox address: it is for sending documents to yourself. Do not publish it or use it to receive other people's material without their agreement. We accept mail only from the addresses you list, and we delete anything you have not imported after 30 days. We may suspend an address that is being used to send unlawful material or in bulk.
• Cloud storage: your use of Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or Notion is governed by your agreement with that service. Type Shifter acts on your instruction to open or save a file and does nothing on its own. A conversion — a document into a Notion page, or a page into a document — is a best effort: some formatting has no equivalent on the other side, and anything that cannot be carried over is left out.
• Saved web pages: the extension saves a copy of a page for your own reading. Copyright in that page stays with whoever owns it: keep saved pages for yourself, and do not republish them. Do not use the extension to copy material you are not allowed to copy, or to take content in bulk from any site.
• References: the formatting follows published style rules, but a citation is your responsibility. Check anything you submit, particularly where a reference was read from a document by AI, which can misread a name, a year or a page range.

3g. Invites and Rewards

• The offer: Someone who starts using Type Shifter with your invite link gets extra free trial days. When they buy a licence, you receive AI credits. Both amounts are shown in the app and may change for future invites, with the amount shown at the time applying.
• Limits: There is a limit on how many rewards one person can receive in a month, and an invite can be claimed once per person and device.
• Fair use: Invites are for sharing with real people who might use the app. Creating accounts or devices to claim rewards, buying and cancelling licences to trigger them, or posting codes for the purpose of farming rewards is not permitted. We may withhold rewards, cancel a code, or revoke a licence obtained this way.
• No obligation: We may change or end the invite scheme at any time. Credits already given are not withdrawn except in the case of abuse described above.

4. User Content and Intellectual Property

Your Content: You retain all rights to any text, documents, or other content you process through Type Shifter ("User Content"). We do not claim any ownership rights to your User Content.

Our Intellectual Property: Type Shifter, including its design, features, code, graphics, logos, and all related intellectual property, is owned by us and protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or create derivative works based on our intellectual property without explicit written permission.

Feedback: Any feedback, suggestions, or ideas you provide regarding the Application may be used by us without any obligation to compensate you.

AI Tools Processing Licence: If you use the AI Tools add-on, you grant us, and our third-party AI processing provider, a limited licence to process the document text, questions, or images you submit, solely to generate the output you requested. We do not use this content for any other purpose, and it is not used to train AI models (see our Privacy Policy, Section 1d). You confirm you have the right to submit any content you process through AI Tools.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree to use Type Shifter only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You agree NOT to:

• Use the Application in any way that violates applicable laws or regulations
• Process content that is illegal, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, or otherwise objectionable
• Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the Application
• Remove, alter, or obscure any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices
• Use the Application to process content that infringes on third-party intellectual property rights
• Share, transfer, or resell your Premium license to third parties

6. Privacy and Data

Your privacy is important to us. Please refer to our Privacy Policy for detailed information about how we handle data. In summary:

• Most text processing occurs locally on your device
• The two exceptions are cross-device library sync, which runs automatically on devices where you have activated a licence, and the optional AI Tools add-on, which is used only when you choose one of those tools. Both are explained in full in the Privacy Policy, including how to have sync disabled for your licence
• Minimal usage data (trial/licence status, recent file names, preferences) is stored locally on your device for functionality purposes

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

TYPE SHIFTER IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR THAT THE APPLICATION WILL BE ERROR-FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED.

We do not warrant that the Bionic Reading feature will improve reading speed or comprehension for all users. Results may vary based on individual factors.

AI-generated output (summaries, translations, simplified text, flashcards, OCR cleanup, answers to questions, and image descriptions) is produced by an automated third-party AI model and may occasionally be inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate for your purpose. We do not warrant the accuracy of AI-generated output, and you should review it before relying on it, particularly for factual, medical, legal, or safety-critical content.

8. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE APPLICATION.

Our total liability for any claims arising from your use of the Application shall not exceed the amount you paid for the Premium license.

9. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Type Shifter and its creators from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Application, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of third parties.

10. Termination

We reserve the right to terminate or suspend your access to the Application at any time, without prior notice, for conduct that we believe violates these Terms or is harmful to other users, us, or third parties.

11. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United Kingdom, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the Application shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the United Kingdom.

12. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

13. Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Type Shifter regarding your use of the Application and supersede any prior agreements.
