Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

Bionic Reading is a reading method designed to help people stay focused while reading. It works by highlighting the initial letters of each word (typically the first 2-4 letters) in bold, creating what are called "artificial fixation points."

When you read normally, your eyes move across text in a series of jumps called "saccades." The idea behind Bionic Reading is to give your brain anchor points so your eyes settle on each word more easily, recognising the bolded portion and filling in the rest.

It's worth being honest about the evidence: independent studies have not reliably shown that Bionic Reading makes people read faster. What's more consistent is that some readers, particularly people with ADHD, find it easier to focus and re-read less. It costs nothing to try, so the best test is your own reading. We cover the research in full here.

Type Shifter allows you to adjust the intensity of Bionic Reading from 5% to 45%, so you can find the perfect balance that works for your reading style.

Import Formats (files you can upload):

TXT - Plain text files, the simplest and most universal format
RTF - Rich Text Format, preserves basic formatting
DOCX - Microsoft Word documents (2007 and later)
PDF - Portable Document Format, extracts text content
MD - Markdown files, popular with writers and developers
EPUB - E-book format used by most e-readers
HTML - Web page files

Maximum file size is 10MB. For larger documents, consider splitting them into smaller sections.

Export Formats (files you can download):

HTML - Best for viewing in web browsers, preserves all formatting including dark mode
DOCX - Opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice
EPUB - Perfect for e-readers like Kindle (via conversion), Kobo, and Apple Books
PDF - Universal format ideal for printing and sharing

All export formats preserve your chosen styling, including dark mode, fonts, and Bionic Reading formatting.

By default, yes — everything stays on your device. Type Shifter processes all text locally. This means:

• Your documents are not uploaded to any server by default
• Bionic Reading, formatting, OCR, and text-to-speech all happen entirely on your device
• We never see, read, or store content you haven't chosen to sync
• There is no analytics or tracking

There are two exceptions. The first is cross-device library sync, which is optional and off unless you turn it on. If you enable it, the documents, highlights, and reading position for the items you choose to sync are stored securely on our servers, so they can follow you between your Windows, Android, and web apps. This is capped at 250MB across up to 4 devices per license, and you decide per-document whether to sync just the plain text or a full copy with original formatting.

The second is the optional AI Tools add-on (Summarize, Translate, Simplify, Ask a Question, Flashcards, OCR Cleanup, and Describe Images). Using any of these sends the relevant document text to our AI provider to generate a response, only when you actively choose to use one of these tools. Offline Translate on Windows is different: it runs entirely on your device and never sends text anywhere.

The only data stored on your device regardless of sync is:

• Your trial/premium status (to know if you've purchased)
• Names of your last 5 files (for the Recent Files feature - NOT the content)
• Your preference settings (like Bionic Reading intensity)

This data stays on your device and can be cleared by clearing your browser storage. We don't use analytics, tracking pixels, or any data collection tools beyond what's needed to make sync itself work.

Type Shifter reads your text aloud in 49 languages with 179 voices in total, all processed on-device with no cloud costs or subscription required.

English: 28 neural voices (British and American, male and female)
48 additional languages: 151 more voices, covering major world languages including Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and dozens more

Because everything runs locally, there's no per-character cost and no internet connection needed once a voice has downloaded.

The AI Tools add-on can summarise a document, translate it into one of 20 languages, simplify it to an easier reading level, answer questions about it, generate study flashcards, clean up garbled OCR text, and describe embedded images aloud for accessibility.

• Available as a monthly subscription (Tier 1 or Tier 2) on top of your licence
• Each tool has its own monthly usage allowance, shown in the app
• Uses your document text to generate a response, only when you actively use one of these tools

On Windows, there's also a separate Offline Translate feature, included free with every licence, no subscription needed. It translates whole documents entirely on your device, with no internet connection required.

Yes, and it's included free with every license. Cross-device library sync keeps your imported documents, reading position, and highlights consistent across your Windows desktop app, Android app, and the web app.

• Sync up to 250MB of content across up to 4 devices per license
• For each document, choose Text only (covers more books within your storage) or Full copy (preserves original formatting)
• Sync happens automatically in the background — no manual "sync now" step needed
• It's opt-in: nothing syncs unless you're logged in with an activated license

Desktop App: Yes! The Windows desktop app works completely offline after installation. Once installed, you never need an internet connection to use any features. All processing happens locally on your computer.

Web App: The web version requires an internet connection to load initially, but once loaded, all text processing happens in your browser without sending data anywhere.

This makes Type Shifter perfect for:

• Working on planes, trains, or anywhere without WiFi
• Processing sensitive documents that can't be uploaded to the cloud
• Users in areas with limited or unreliable internet
• Anyone who values complete privacy and data control

The free trial includes full access to every feature with absolutely no limitations:

• All 150 style templates
• 1,900+ custom Google Fonts (heading and body)
• Bionic Reading with adjustable intensity (5-45%)
• OpenDyslexic font support
• Light & dark mode toggle
• All import formats (TXT, RTF, DOCX, PDF, MD, EPUB, HTML)
• All export formats (HTML, DOCX, EPUB, PDF)

• Recent files history
• Unlimited document processing

The trial lasts 14 days from your first use. After the trial ends, you can purchase a lifetime license for £29 to continue using all features forever.

We believe in letting you fully experience the app before buying - that's why there are no feature restrictions during the trial.

Yes! Your one-time payment of £29 includes:

• Lifetime access to Type Shifter
• All future updates and improvements
• All new features we add
• Bug fixes and performance improvements
• New templates and export options

OpenDyslexic is a free, open-source typeface specifically designed to increase readability for people with dyslexia.

Key features of OpenDyslexic:

Weighted bottoms: Letters have heavier bottoms, which helps prevent them from visually "flipping" or rotating in the reader's mind
Unique letter shapes: Similar letters (like b, d, p, q) have distinct shapes to prevent confusion
Increased spacing: More space between letters reduces visual crowding
Consistent baseline: Helps eyes track along lines more smoothly

Who benefits from OpenDyslexic:

• People with dyslexia (approximately 10% of the population)
• Readers who experience visual stress or fatigue
• Anyone who finds standard fonts difficult to read
• Students and professionals who read for extended periods

You can combine OpenDyslexic with Bionic Reading for even better results. The "Dyslexia Friendly" template automatically applies both features together.

Web App (Free with limitations):

• Runs in your browser - no installation needed
• Requires internet connection to load
• 14-day free trial, then requires purchase
• All features included during trial
• Works on any operating system with a modern browser

Desktop App (£29 Lifetime):

• Installed on your Windows computer
• Works completely offline
• Faster performance for large documents
• No browser needed
• Dedicated app icon and native experience
• All future updates included

Android App (same £29 lifetime license):

• Installed on your phone
• Works completely offline
• Same license key activates it as the desktop app
• Read and listen on the go

All three versions have identical features and share the same license, so buying once covers Windows, Android, and web. Cross-device library sync keeps your documents, reading position, and highlights consistent across whichever combination you use.
